Kergord Hatchery Bookshop is a second-hand bookshop in Weisdale, situated just opposite the Bonhoga café and art gallery. We sell a wide range of books for children and adults, fiction and non-fiction, on subjects ranging from history to nature and wildlife, politics and current affairs to travel and science, antiquarian to sci-fi and fantasy, thrillers and romance, classics, poetry, gardening and cookery. Our friendly receptionist is always there to help. You'll recognise us because we're sitting behind our fabulous reception desk under a sign that says “Reception & The Boss”. Feel free to ask us and we'll do our best to point you at what you're looking for.
The bookshop has seats and wide aisles, as well as a wheelchair-accessible toilet and ramped entrance. There is a dedicated children's area, and places to sit if you need to park yourself while you’re browsing. We have large print books, short reads and quick reads for less confident readers, and books in a range of other languages. There is plenty of free parking, and an EO Charging electric vehicle charging point is also free during opening hours for bookshop customers.
Dogs (with well-behaved owners) are welcome, and a water bowl is available by the entrance. We also have a cow. She is part of an international charity: The Cow Parade, in which cities sponsor life size model cows, get local artists to paint them and auction them for charity. We believe ours started life in London, though we picked her up second-hand in the Highlands.
Our map of Shetland was created by visiting artist Amanda Welch in 2014 and exhibited during a residency in Shetland in 2018.
We are situated opposite Bonhoga Gallery and Café, an art gallery and shop run by Shetland Arts promoting the best of Shetland, national and international applied art and craft, with a popular café serving home made soups, light lunches and (fabulous) cakes. So together we make a great focus for a day out exploring the local area or as a stop on the way to or from the westside or north of Shetland.
